Stag Do Done

I know I usually do this post on a Sunday, but I wasn’t feeling up to typing stuff out last night, so do forgive me.

So then. David’s Stag Night – an abridged version of Saturday night’s journey.

Countdown to NEW Street Fighter / NEW Halo

It’ll be a busy week – Apparently there’s an election on soon too. Although why would I want a countdown to that?

Looking forward to new Halo and new Street Fighter

These two games are sure to be amazing, and we get a taste of both of them in the next couple of weeks.

April 30th – Super Street Fighter IV is released.
May 3rd – The Halo: Reach Public Multiplayer Beta begins.

Although Super Street Fighter IV is pretty much just an expansion of the vanilla Street Fighter IV, the stuff it does add is looking really good. My favourite character ever, for one thing (Adon). I love what they’ve done with his theme. It was fuck-yeah-awesome already, now it’s just out of this world.

Old version:

Fuck-yeah-awesome new version:

As well as Adon, there’s new online modes, you can save replays at will (in vanilla SFIV you could only save your own replays if you were in the top 5,000 players, something I would never be capable of), and the old-school car-bashing, barrel-smashing bonus rounds are back too.

And new Halo, well, what can I say? The Reach Multiplayer Beta hits soon, and I’m really looking forward to it. If they can bring back some of that Halo 2 magic, I’ll be a happy chappy. I love how your Spartan is totally customisable, and will be unified across all game modes, I’ve been wanting that for years. And Jet-packs! I’ve been on about them since I saw an Elite fly past in Halo: Combat Evolved and I wanted to try one out for myself.

New forum style - re-done!

So yeah, it’s been changed twice in less than a week now. The prosilverSE style wasn’t suitable, so we went with something a bit more like the old style in terms of layout. Overall, it’s much better, and apart from the code behind the banner being much stranger than I’m used to (and thus proving to be a bitch to alter), everything has gone much smoother on this update.

The new skin, AeroBlue, is courtesy of phpBB Headquarters. Hey, they also do this skin for WordPress. While it would be nice for the forum and the blog to look the same, I’ve grown quite attached to Atahualpa.

Let’s hope I don’t have to do this again for a very long time though, right?

VideogameLOL of the week: American politics are not really my thing but I guess this is a bit funny

Today I am bringing you the Cheezburger network website: Bob’s House of Video Games. It’s quite funny, but there’s not much on there at the moment.

Is this because they took the BR out of Halo 3: ODST? Get over it, people! It is time for Battle Rifle reform.

Cowboy boots

This week I have been mostly writing about Halo 2 and doing up the forum. It’s been a mixed bag in terms of feedback on it – some like the bold new colours, some prefer the muted tones of yesterday. You can’t please all of the people all of the time though. It’ll work out in the end, whether it stays dark blue or I change it to the powdery blue colour.

Doctor Who was ok yesterday. The story was a bit iffy, I felt it was kinda bolted on after they decided they needed to bring the Daleks back. Although Amy Pond in cowboy boots was massive win.

New forum style – done!

It didn’t take too long from me deciding enough was enough and it had to be changed to it being pretty much finished. As much as I love Mike Lothar’s phpBB2 styles, they just weren’t cutting it in phpBB3. Optimization was an issue, and we were missing out on a load of features that the style just did not support. Sure, the colours are a bit bolder than we’re used to, but I think it’ll be fine once we’ve gotten used to them.

I’d like to thank the following people/organisations for their indirect help. Mike Lothar for the original Nosebleed/Conundrum, CiC for the phpBB3 port, and CyberAlien for the ColorizeIt! application. I may even have to put some permanent links up somewhere just to show my appreciation – not that we get much traffic, but y’know, it’s nice to be nice.

All I need to do now is sort out the top image and put a link to here on the index somewhere. I’m glad it was straightforward and there were no major problems. Shit-loads of minor ones, but nothing major.

Check out the new style forum now.

Goodbye Halo 2

Dawn Of The Dead - Halo 2 style

Last night was the last time Halo 2 will ever be playable over Xbox Live. Personally, I didn’t attend (I got rid of Halo 2 ages ago – I never envisioned a time when we’d play it again), but I have spent the time being devoted to Halo 2 in other ways. I’ve been listening to the soundtrack (thanks again Orca, Secret Santa 2005), it’s telling of the iconic quality of the music that “Heavy Price Paid” is still used in Halo 3. I’ve been re-doing the forum, which is kind of a homage to Halo – I’d like it to be functional before Reach comes along. I’ve also been writing this blog entry, a retrospective of the Epic Win that was Halo 2.

The original, iconic RF! forum banner

Now, where to start? The Summer of 2004, Gamesradar, Halo 2, blah blah, the full version can be found here. This isn’t about RF! though, it’s about Halo 2. It was my first real experience of modern online gaming. Xbox Live itself was a revelation, with a unified friends list that was compatible through all Xbox Live enabled games, voice communication (well, apart from Powers to begin with) and smooth, high speed online gameplay. Then there was Halo 2. The Halo series was, and still is, the nicest First Person Shooter to control, it’s just so smooth and responsive. The Bungie FPS’s just feel so good. The engine underneath it all was solid. There was a satisfying recoil in the meaty weapons, both visual, aural and through the controller. The maps were (mostly) interesting and fun to play in. The icing on the cake though, were the in-depth stats available on Bungie.net. I spent almost as many hours on there poring over wins and losses as I did at my Xbox, making those wins and losses. Compare it to my previous experiences of online gaming (Phantasy Star Online on the Dreamcast) and you can see, this truly was next-gen.

The rules for RocketBall, summed up in one simple image

Here are some random moments of RF! Halo 2 history that still stick out in my mind to this very day.

“When you spawn, you will find you have a Shotgun and a Sword”. The time all the Elites played in character – “Capture the Sacred Icon my Brothers! Burn the Heretics!”. Orca telling us not to worry, and that “they can’t arm it” – only for the opposition bomb to explode, losing us a round. RF! winning the “Best Thread Ever” on Gamesradar. Dante’s Peak. Cubeamania flying to the top of Headlong and never coming back down. Orca arming his SMG. Somehow managing to run myself over in a Warthog by going over a tiny hill on Coagulation. Dante blocking the grav-lift on Headlong. Dawn Of The Dead on Headlong (box yourself in under the stairs!). Dawn Of The Dead on Foundation (To Room 4!). Dawn Of The Dead on Waterworks (yeah, where the fuck is everyone?). Elites clearly being the same size as Spartans. Boosting a Wraith into a pillar on Burial Mounds hoping to see The Giant Master Chief. The time we were just standing and chatting up on top of one of the bases on Coagulation, and Jane just assassinated Grumpy for no reason. Destroying XBM at Halo 2. The various “Dress up as Orca for our Anniversary” evenings. Some French guy telling me to “Go and play Rainbow Six Black Arrow, you noob”. The incredible gametypes: Tony Martin, Ghosts of Mars, Snipe 1-flag, ASDA Flag, Heartbeat, Take The Turret, and so many more I cannot hope to remember.

Maybe you have some of your own? Make a comment here, or post them on the forum – go on, share.

The less initiated among you may be wondering what all these images peppered around are – they are cherished memories, each one. Could Reach be our Renaissance? Check out the Halo 2 image gallery which is elsewhere on my blog – they are mostly of the time we had a “Photocall” – loads of Furies showed up and Orca took pictures of his TV with his camera – and there are a few other random ones on there too.

Halo 3 just wasn’t the same. I’m not sure why it didn’t gel as well as Halo 2 – was it the lack of clan support? The maps not being as good as they were in Halo 2? Bastardising Dawn Of The Dead by making a proper Zombie gametype? By all accounts, with The Forge, screenshots and saved films, it should have been better. Still, Halo Reach is looking like it may recapture the brilliance of Halo 2, and it’s not long ’til we get a taster in the form of the Multiplayer Beta. Fingers crossed, eh?

I'm not the same person I was seven years ago

I went back and re-read this post the other day – it was most enlightening. I was so sad back then, I look back and it’s genuinely hard for me to recognise my own writing. I mean, I know it’s just words on a screen, it’s not hand-written, but it’s hard for me to see that it was me.

I had an interview today, part 2

Remember this?

I didn’t get it. Fucksakes.

It’s all good though. The sun is shining, so I went for a nice long walk in the beautiful weather, picked up a couple of application forms for some more jobs, it cleared my head and my sinuses.

And I found a pack of cigarettes in my bag when I thought I had run out. Bonus.

Resident Evil 5 Achievements

Man, some of the Achievements on this were obscure. Here are my tips for some of them.

I had trouble getting “The Works” Achievement. For this, Chris attacks an enemy with a melee attack, then Sheva follows up quickly with a melee attack, then Chris finishes the enemy off with a final melee blow. I found it best to do this in mission 6-1 (the boat) versus the Big-Man Majini – but I guess you could do it on any mission with a Big-Man Majini in it. I found this one to be the easiest as the enemy in question is located quite early on in the level and he’s alone.

Now, be sure to bring a flash grenade with you. Go through the level as normal, you’ll know he’s near when there’s a little cut-scene of some dogs jumping out of a freight container. Kill the two or three guys that rush towards you and, if you remember, he should be hiding just around the corner. Ready your grenade, strafe around the corner, throw it at his feet then run towards him. As he’s staggering around, mash X. Chris will hit him, then Sheva should hit him, then Chris will do a back-fist type thing and the Achievement will pop. You have to almost mash the X button so the combo happens very swiftly, none of the tips I initially found on the internet mentioned the button pushes have to be quite fast!

Getting the final figure (rare Wesker) means being awarded an S rank at the end of each chapter – don’t worry, it’s not that hard – you can do this on Amateur. Best to combine this endeavour with getting your completion time for the Amateur difficulty level down to under 5 hours. While the infinite ammo Rocket Launcher isn’t directly connected to any Achievement, it can help greatly in the acquisition of some of them, and I would say it’s essential for a Pro run. Be sure to get your Amateur time down to under 5 hours!

Getting all the treasures was a bit of a pain. I had most of them after one run but one of them in particular was so well hidden it was obscene – like me, you’ll probably be missing the Topaz (Oval). In mission 6-1 (the boat, again!) there are two Majini standing on top of the crane that moves to trap Sheva in the middle of the level. Sniping these two enemies before Sheva has been trapped allows you to pick the jewels up after Sheva has been trapped, a little further on in the level (roughly where the two Big-Man Majini spawn).

Killing thirty enemies with the Stun Rod, Gatling Gun and Sheva’s Bow are easily achieved on the very first stage where lots and lots of Majini come for you and Sheva suggests you run towards a nearby house. Sure, on your first run through that was a good idea, but when you have a Stun Rod, Gatling Gun or the Bow it can be quite easy as all those weapons have infinite usage. With the Rod, let them come to you – swipe it at them when they’re close enough. One hit should put them down for good. Stand your ground with the Gatling Gun and just hold the trigger, easy enough. The Bow can be tricky as it doesn’t have a targeting laser, but the fast firing speed and the impressive piercing power make up for that. It’s easy to correct a missed shot by quickly following up with another, and any advancing Majinis behind the one you’re aiming at will go down too.

I found this is also the best place to get the Lead Aspirin Achievement. Simply mow down the first wave, then push on to either the left or the right, where enemies are climbing over fences to get at you. Time a Shotgun blast to their face as they are dropping down to floor level – aim high and the spray of pellets should net you some Gamerscore.

I still have to finish off Professional difficulty, but it shouldn’t be too bad now I’ve got the Rocket Launcher’s infinite ammo and enough money to buy as many First Aid Sprays as I need. Overall, good gaem!!!!

More 7 on 7 fail

7_on_7_achievementHehe, I forgot to do this again.

That’s, what, eight months in a row now?

I really need to put a note somewhere I can see it to remind myself. I spent most of last night playing the Blur multiplayer Beta (Blur? Take the real cars of PGR, mix them with Mario Kart weapons that have been designed by the little spaceship from Geometry Wars). Pretty good fun on first impressions, and very pretty, but the handling of the cars is awful and soon outweighs the fun of the weapons.

Anyway, it’s not even like the Achievement is worth a whole lot of points, it’s 0 Gamerscore, I JUST FUCKING WANT IT.

Fox news

Ah, so funny. Bad puns are awesome.

Remember this? More specifically, the post about how I can’t get a picture of a fox? Well, I got some. Granted, the fox was injured and not at all itself – out in plain sight in the daylight, hobbling around on three legs with a back end ravaged by mange – I still got some pics though!

The first picture was taken from the boys’ bedroom window, the second from the kitchen window. It’s so odd to see a fox during daylight, even more so to see it curled up in open ground during daylight. The third picture was taken a short while after, it had gotten up and had a quick drink from the pond. You can see it doesn’t look itself just from the expression on it’s face. Poor thing.

The man from the RSPCA came and took it away. From what I’ve seen on TV vet programs, if the bone is broken than they’ll probably put it down. If it’s just a sprain or muscle problem then he’ll be treated and released back to the wild. I hope it’s just a sprain, poor thing.

We’re not expecting an update on the fox’s condition, but if we get one I’ll let you know.
