Let 2010 be forever remembered as the time England would have won the World Cup had the Officials seen that Frank Lampard’s effort had crossed the line. You know, just like they would’ve won the World Cup in 2006 had Rooney not been sent off, and the time before when David Beckham got sent off or the time before that… You get my drift, it never seems to be their own fault. Fair enough, from the time it was 2-0 to Germany to the time Lampard “scored” they finally showed they had some of that English passion, but for the previous three and a bit games they just looked half-hearted and didn’t put any pressure on their opponents. I’ve enjoyed the World Cup so far, I think I’ll write up some thoughts on the group and last 16 stages during the week some time, or wait ’til the whole thing is over and do some summaries, I don’t know. Yesterday also saw Matt Smith’s first series as The Doctor come to an end. A very satisfying end, if you ask me. He’s really grown into the role, dropped all the Tennant-isms and become his own entity. Karen Gillan was also very good, a different kind of companion to the rest. Credit to the writing team for delivering the best series of Doctor Who since the reboot. Other than that, it’s been quiet. It’s been too hot to get up to much! We’ve just been enjoying the sunshine mostly, I’m always so surprised at how easily Jane tans, she’s proper brown! I do hope it cools down a little bit though – weather like this is nice for holidays or long weekends, but the daily grind at this heat is just unbearable. Lips: I Love the 80′s is absolutely amazing, I have to mention this. Jane has always loved 80′s music and picked it up in Asda earlier in the week. An inspired decision, I must admit. I was surprised how many songs I knew – or at least thought I knew! It seems I mostly only know the catchy chorus bits, but we still scored plenty of Bronze and Silver Cups, we even got a Gold Cup on one song (You get a Cup if you rank in the top 1000 – the higher, the better). I can see us playing that disc more than the other three combined! Jane and I had a sneaky session on it earlier on in the week, went through a good selection of the tunes on offer and mopped up some of the easier Achievements (the party medal and performance medal are almost impossible not to get if you’re paying attention) and Avatar Awards. There are some great songs on there which I didn’t actually realise I liked until I sang them. Stuff like Tainted Love, Don’t Leave Me This Way, Gold, Rio, Come On Eileen, Shout, all great songs that are fun to sing. And of course we had to have a go on Walkin’ On Sunshine. Then last night we gave it a proper go on the downstairs 360 with Claire and Lewis – Hopefully tonight will yield another good session. All four Resurgence packs are out now, 80msp each, 5 new Achievements in all, 10g each for a total of 50g.
Stunning new levels, great fun. Service Interruption is an interesting one – I found that a good way to stop the aliens getting near the cores was to install Meteors – they were able to hit the waves better than regular Guns because of the little walls blocking the way. I preferred to kill them before they got to the cores so I get more resources. Gold. Height of Confusion was fun because it lets you put whatever you want anywhere and create some really long paths. Consisting of two entrances onto an empty 12×12 grid, with one exit coming straight off it, it’s pretty much the most basic level of all. It was pretty easy because of this. Gold. Risk Exposure was a pain until I found the choke-point. I stuck 5 Guns on the little raised platform between the two paths in the corner – They took out most things on both paths. Gold. Roundabout is still giving me problems – I’m yet to find the most efficient path. The bit near the cores is easy, block the quick route to them and make them have to walk all the way back up and down the ramps to the south-east. The last wave on this level is absolutely brutal, I tell you. By the time the last wave hits I usually still have two of those slow red bosses trundling through, their shields are unnaturally heavy. In the last wave there are three fast bosses, accompanied by cloakers and loads of other fast enemies, it’s the hardest last wave in the game, I’d say. Silver. Urban Planning is brilliant. There are two paths, one of them is standard Defense Grid stuff but the other is a steady stream of walkers who progressively get stronger – let even one of them get a core and they’ll relay it to their exit in no time. Gold.Tactical Diversion is massive, like a jigsaw puzzle. I’ve only dabbled a little bit to see what it’s like, so I’m nowhere near working out what the optimal route to send the enemies is. It’s nowhere near as bad as The Last Stand in The Awakening, but there’s enough scope here to give me head-aches. Bronze. Kill Zone was good fun. The route goes around a big block of turret spaces, then comes out and goes down the middle to a big open plot where you can design a maze, to the cores, then back up the middle ramp, around another big block of turret spaces, then to the exit. At first I thought enemies came out both the entrance and the exit, but as soon as I realised this wasn’t the case (should’ve paid more attention!) I saw that Guns positioned on the left tower could hit the entry ramp and the middle ramp, and that Guns on the right tower were pretty pointless. Gold. Overflow is another of those maze-y ones. I’ve only had a little look to see what it’s like, so have no idea of the optimal route. A nice touch is that to get the last 10g’s you need to get Gold medals on each of the modes in Overflow. Once worked out, the optimal turret placing pattern should work for each challenge, but it’ll be interesting to see how the different rules affect the route. Overall, it was £2.72 well spent. http://www.trueachievements.com/ Now, along with some other guys on RF, I had set myself a Gamerscore target (get from 38,000 to 50,000) for 2010. What I didn’t realise at the time was that you could actually set yourself goals on TrueAchievements! I set myself two goals yesterday. The first is to get to 50,000 Gamerscore and the second is to increase my Achievement completion percentage to 75%. The cool thing about the goals on there is that you can see how you are progressing – I should have set it ages ago as I quite enjoy stats and charts and stuff. Also worth mentioning are the Boost List and the general helpfulness and clarity of the Achievement listings. If you put a game on your Boost List, it automatically puts you on a list that can be seen by other gamers who want to boost that particular game. It could be for things like trading wins on Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix (let’s face it, I’m never going to win 20 matches on that game – it’s just not as smooth as Super Street Fighter IV), or serious challenges like going for the 10x Multiplier Twins and Millionaire Twins on Mutant Storm Empire (something that requires two people). The Achievement listings themselves are very clear, and most have individual guides specific to that individual Achievement, so rather than having to wade through a long walkthrough, you can just find the one that’s giving you trouble and find some advice. Last night I played Just Dance on a Nintendo Wii and surprisingly, I really enjoyed it. The night before I played Lips on the 360 (I knew I would enjoy that though, it’s great fun). And although I was initially not too fond of the idea of Kinect, I’m coming around to it now, as we have two genuine children in the house who would love it, and three grown up children (Claire, Jane and I) in the house who would also love it. Damn, I need to play some Street Fighter, or some Halo 3, get me out of this funk! Maybe the Crackdown 2 demo (which is out tomorrow) will go some way to prove I’m still a real gamer. I hope they’ve kept the feel of the first game – It’s being made by a different developer than the first game, so it’s a justified worry that they may think they know better. Let’s hope not. On an unrelated note, Stellar has been spamming the comments (http://waves.randomfury.co.uk/comments/feed/, you’ll need to scroll down a bit as I have replied to them all), four comments in one day, some kind of record! I guess most of the announcements and big reveals have been made by now, so it’s safe for me to write up my thoughts on the event. I usually don’t bother with E3, but I had a bit of time on my hands this year, mostly because Jane was in Newcastle, so I sat at the PC looking at new games instead of doing stuff with her. Where to start? I guess with the game that I’m looking forward to most: Reach. They just keep adding more and more cool stuff to it. We got our first look at the Campaign mode at Microsoft’s conference, overall it looks busier, grittier, and somehow more vibrant. Seeing the neon Jackal shields against the green grass brought back so many memories of Halo. We also got a first look at “space combat” – a massive departure for the Halo series which sees you take to the upper atmosphere and blow up Banshees. I’m unconvinced on this one so far to be honest. Halo very rarely doesn’t let you do things your way, and you can’t exactly hold X to hop out and try the mission on foot.Then there’s Firefight, which has been given a massive upgrade – it’s now as customisable as multiplayer games are. You can choose how many enemies (and indeed what type of enemies) spawn in each wave, customise loadouts and armour abilities, choose which skulls activate and when and you can even design your own custom skulls (manipulate player and enemy traits to create subtle or outlandish combat modifiers). The biggest plus point for me is probably that Matchmaking has been integrated into Firefight – it was quite annoying having to either round up friends or go it alone, and not being able to drop in to a game of Firefight with randoms. Of course, stuff like Forge and the Theatre will still be in there – Reach is looking like an incredibly generous and complete package. The second most anticipated game for me is Child of Eden from Q Entertainment – a follow up to the incredible Rez, in all but name. I was initially distraught, thinking it would be a Kinect-only title, but I was so happy to read that it would work with a regular controller. But then, thinking about it, if one game could sell Kinect to me, it’d be this. After watching various gameplay videos, I’ve come around to the visuals now. At first I was like “It’s too busy! It’s not as streamlined and sleek as Rez!”, but now I’m like “It looks gorgeous, I want it to melt my eyes”.Other random things I like the look of: Portal 2 – The original hurt my brain so much, I can only imagine the kind of head-aches having twice as many portals to worry about will bring. Marvel vs Capcom 3 – Dante looks promising, but I can’t see it bettering Super Street Fighter IV. Fable III – a release date, yeah! Crazy Taxi on Xbox Live Arcade – not strictly an E3 thing, but it was at the show. Although, will it be the same with The Offspring? Pac-Man Championship Edition DX – more modes, more mazes, more fun. Bomberman Live Battlefest – I’ll do my usual moan – I hope they make it so you can skid round corners like Pac-Man like you could in the classic games. Dead Rising 2 – Slightly worried about some aspects of the game, but I’m sure it’ll be fine. Crackdown 2 – I’ll be sure to post my impressions of the upcoming demo. Vanquish – Fast paced shooting action, it looks absolutely stunning. I’m sure there’s stuff I’ve forgotten to mention, too. A lot of it was “not for me”, but seeing as I’m not really interested in those things, I won’t knock them. So what if I don’t like the idea of waving a wand (or just my arms) around – I like to keep things positive nowadays. Criticising something just for the sake of it does no-one any good. Wow, it’s been a year already? It’s the little ones Birthday today, and while I’m a bit sad we didn’t get to Longdown Dairy Farm yesterday to see her, I’m OK as I spent a lot of time with her at David and Katie’s wedding and at the BBQ afterwards. Look how much she’s grown up in her first year. She’ll be walking around and talking before we know it, I can’t wait, I’m so proud to be related to such a beautiful little lady. She did! Traded in her old one and got a nice new one. A three year old ex-mobility Peugeot (it’s hardly got any miles on it compared to how old it is), and it’s lovely. So much roomier than her old one, I can actually sit upright in the passenger seat, and it’ll be ideal for when we have kids. She went with a diesel engine, as it’s more economical in terms of fuel prices as she’s driving so far every day nowadays. I have christened it “Sazoo”, as the three letters on the license plate are “SZO”. Nice name. Interesting fact, she bought Herzog in February 2005. How do I know this so exactly? Well, my very first blog post mentioned her buying her old 206. I feel like we’ve come full circle, or something. Goodbye Herzog, hello Sazoo.
I remember when it first came out, none of us on Random Fury were too impressed with Revenge. We had played Burnout: Takedown to death online (sometimes we’d even skip Halo 2 and go straight to Burnout you know), and this new one just seemed a bit too different, if you know what I mean. But coming into it with a clear head this time, I enjoyed it from the off a lot more. Sure, the cars lack personality compared to the previous games (I fucking loved that little green car), and they all look a little samey (even the names of the cars are dull and generic), but I got over that by concentrating on the game itself and the challenge it presented. I’m by no means the best driver in the world (or player of racing games at that), but I’m getting through it at a nice pace. Only one event has proved really tricky so far – the preview lap in the sixth tier of events (racing the Criterion Racer GT around White Mountain), but it was the sweetest 30g’s of the game so far when I finally nailed it. I got a bit ahead of myself and did all of the Crash Junctions as soon as I unlocked a new tier, I couldn’t help myself, I just love them. A handy tip is that if you are finding an early event too tough, or just want some extra oomph, go to the highest tier available and get a Bronze (or better, if you like) medal in one of the Traffic Attack events that unlock a new car. Doing some of the lower tier events with a top tier car really gives you an edge. I just have the last two tiers to go, but I’m in no hurry to finish it off as I’m enjoying it very much. I won’t bother with the online Achievements as (I said before) I’m not the greatest of racing gamers.I love the weighty clout of the vehicles juxtaposed with their fragility, I love the feeling of speed that no other racing game comes close to matching, and I love how it has the best drifting model in any racing game I’ve ever played. I love how Burnout has a vernacular all of it’s own. Other players are “Rivals”, ramming non-competing traffic is called “Checking”, smash an opponent off the road for a “Takedown”, it’s all very well thought out. What next though? I have re-downloaded the Burnout: Paradise demo – I tried it when it was first released and I was not too impressed, but given that I’ve gone back to this and loved it, maybe I could get my head around a new, free-roaming Burnout. I gave it a whirl and it seems a whole lot more weighty than the previous games, slightly more realistic you could say, given how extreme the crashes got in Revenge. I’m interested, to say the least. Next stop: Paradise? After all the excitement of last week, this week has been a bit more reserved, not a lot has happened and it’s been very quiet. I was on a bit of a downer early on in the week, I expected it after the massive highs of last week to be honest. I picked up Burnout: Revenge the other day, it was cheap. It was one of the very first games I got for my 360, but I never played it much as I had completed it and generally played it to death on the original Xbox not long before, so I didn’t feel like playing through it again. But recently I’ve had a hankering for a good racer (reasons: the Blur mulitplayer beta and the Split/Second demo), and seeing as I already knew really enjoyed the Xbox version and I had so many Achievements missing from when I played it for a few minutes in 2006, I thought I’d go back and give it a fairer stab. Also: It’s BURNOUT. My favourite racing game series of all time. |
