I spent this weekend over in Southampton, as it is my Mum’s birthday today. I went over yesterday and got back a few hours ago, I had a lovely time catching up with Mum, and it was great to see my bro and Jasmine after so long. She’s really growing up, walking by herself now, and almost talking coherently (she picks up her toy phone and says something clearly resembling “Hello dog”), she’s so cute. CBeebies is on almost all day here, and now it’s on almost all day at David’s too – we spent more time talking about CBeebies than the usual stuff like awesome films, amazing videogames and cool TV shows, it was most odd. We had a lovely evening in last night, watching X-Factor and eating nibbles, then today we went round to David and Katie’s, then went for a pub lunch. All in all, a lovely weekend.
Can't promise a Golden Warthog, but there will be Golden Mongeese! Headrush, my Headlong “remix” is coming along nicely. About 50% done.
I felt I needed to make the open area a bit bigger – the scale seems different in Reach. It gives vehicles more room to manoeuvre. I’ve made sure I’ve kept the different ground levels in there, so there’s only one way back to the attacking base with the ‘Hog. Testing out “The Jump” with Warthogs and Mongeese was great fun. In the end I decided not to put one of those vehicle sized Man-cannons under the ramp, it got ridiculous. As it is, it’s a sweet jump, nice and legit.
The thing I’ve come to realise about Headlong is that it had so many options for attacking the tower. You could go in the front door. Round the back at ground level. Round the back one level up. Up on the high walkway to the side. Up on the high walkway to the back. Talking of those walkways, I’ve put some Man-cannons going from the outer buildings to the bridges, otherwise with the expanded scale, the bridges would’ve been stupidly long, no-cover DMR death-traps.
In other, Halo-related news, I’ve been ranked! I’m in the Iron/Steel division in the Arena (The game says Iron, bungie.net says Steel. Who’s right?).
To be honest, I’m not surprised or disappointed to be in the bottom 20% of Halo players – Hey, it’s not even like that’s the bottom 20%. The bottom 20% of Halo players would be casuals who float from new game to new game.
I’m in the bottom 20% of serious Halo players who play at least three Team Arena games a day over the course of 7 or more days to be ranked.
There’s a difference.

Taken by real-life chum, Craig.

I finally convinced Jane to watch Dexter! We’re only a few episodes in, but she’s enjoying it, like I knew she would. It’s great watching it from the start again.
Halo: Reach is just immense. There’s so much to do, so many bad guys to kill, Jane and I have been playing it at almost every free moment we’ve had. I’ve not dabbled much in Forge yet, but I’ve worked a few things out, the basics, like. And Jane looks smashing in her Halo: Reach hoodie. Getting the game for £32 would’ve been good enough, but throwing in a limited edition hoodie sealed the deal.

Halo: Reach is full of noobs. I got a Perfection in my first Big Team Battle by basically standing on our teams side of the map with a Sniper Rifle. It was like shooting fish in a barrel. Except red Spartans instead of fish. And Haemorrhage instead of a barrel. I gave up on ever getting one of these in Halo 3 – getting 15 (or more) kills and no deaths in a game was more like torture than a challenge, but there are so many new players who just stand around practically begging to be sniped…

Halo: Reach is officially launched on Tuesday, so I thought I’d take a look back at my time with the franchise – I can hardly believe it’s been ten years!

Halo
It all started way back in the days of working at Game, and the launch of the original Xbox. Halo was the big game of the launch and my manager at the time raved about it. I admit, I was unimpressed when he was telling me how the Pistol was the best weapon, and there were grenades that stuck to your enemies, and that one melee attack to the back of an opponent was an instant kill… But then I played it. Campaign at first, it was immense. I never really got on with other console First Person Shooters such as Goldeneye, Quake II or Perfect Dark on the N64 as they never quite felt right, but this did – the controls were sublime. Lugging an Xbox and TV to Craig’s flat was so worth it. Our Halo LAN sessions were never frequent, and there were only a few of them, but they remain a fondly remembered highlight of my life so far. Given that there were only eight of us playing, Sidewinder and Blood Gulch were probably not the best maps to choose, but man, those CTF games were epic, and it was incredible hearing the shouting and swearing come from the other room when we thwarted an attack and recovered our flag.

New feature alert. Every Thursday I’m going to find my favourite Halo-related screenshot of the past week and post it. It’ll be fun. I call this one “Defining Memory”, because at times I felt I spent more time dead than alive in Halo 3. Hence the picture of me being dead.

We had a BBQ on Saturday, and after all the meaty food was consumed, we went back out to the gently smouldering barbecue and roasted some Marshmallows in the darkness. Claire had to show me what to do, as it was the first time I had ever tried roasting marshmallows. They were quite tasty! The alcohol I had consumed earlier in the day made it easier to withstand the heat, so I could get my marshmallow really deep into the fire, make it golden brown, texture like sun.
Still not having any luck on the job front. Most places aren’t even acknowledging that they’ve received my CV and/or application form nowadays. I’m applying for around three jobs a week on average, and still getting nowhere. It’s a pickle. I’m kinda too qualified for a basic role, but don’t have quite enough experience for a higher one. We’ll get there eventually, I hope.
I’ve been mostly playing Halo 3 this last week, trying to get up to the Lieutenant rank in any playlist and thus unlock the corresponding Achievement before Halo Reach hits. Any other Achievements I pick up along the way are a bonus, my main aim is to complete the Road to Recon and get the armour. This also requires us to have another go at Endure in Halo: ODST. We’ve failed it twice before, so it should be third time lucky. First time we were hit by lag, the game was unplayable. Second time we got all the way to the very last Brute, but thanks to some very fluky Fuel Rod shots by the last Brute Chieftain, and Famine making ammo very scarce, we choked. Must have another go.
Forge in Halo: Reach is, quite simply, looking immense. As well as offering more objects per level, the new tools and abilities at your disposal will hopefully let you re-create maps of old, as faithful to the originals as you can possibly imagine. It’s been occupying my thoughts a lot recently, so I thought I’d write up a “List Of Maps I’m Going To Make In Forge World” when Halo: Reach hits in less than two weeks.
Headlong
Well, I’m going to give it a go. The hardest thing will be to make sure it’s the right size overall, and constructing all those inner stairways could be a pain. Will probably switch teleporters for Man-cannons.
Coagulation
Blood Gulch with basements for Banshees, basically. Shouldn’t be too hard, just raise the existing bases and tweak the insides.
Beaver Creek
It’s a classic, I’ve got to do it. The real problem will be to find an area the right size, I don’t want to have to have big Forerunner walls enclosing it.
Colossus
I loved that map. Two bases that are so near, yet so far. It shouldn’t pose too much trouble, what with the theme of the level and the building materials both being Forerunner. It’s just deciding on a location within Forge World really.
Relic
I also loved this map. I’d need to seriously tweak the height of the elevated base so people can’t just Jetpack up there though. Could probably make it an island out in the waters of Forge World.
Burial Mounds
I loved the subtle tiers on this map. It’s easy to navigate down to the low base, but it can be a long-winded trek going up to the base in the building. This would be the hardest one to do, I think, given that it’s a mostly curved environment. Maybe an angular re-imagination would be better and easier than a straight-up conversion.
Monday Night Combat
For the lols. Loads of see-through walls, grav lifts and maybe a flag/bomb spot that is obscured by a construction built with fusion cores and you have to blow it up (remove the shields) before you can get flag/arm bomb. I could even make it so the Loadouts roughly correspond to the classes in MNC – Assassin has a Sword and Stealth AA, Tank has Focus Rifle and a Hammer, Assault has Jetpack and Assault Rifle, you know, stupid stuff.
Room 4
For Infection gametypes – Foundation was my favourite all time Dawn of the Dead map. Inspired by the best bit of Foundation: Room 4. I tried making this in Halo 3′s Forge and it was a bit pants. I’ll make Room 4 itself, and the two other “Rooms” along the walkways, maybe connect them with tight, easily barricaded corridors and have the zombies spawn in a “Room” on ground level across from Room 4.
Island Map
Like the Silent Cartographer level in Halo: CE Campaign. You could get to the other base by running round the beach either way, or go through the buildings in the middle. I’m sure I saw an island just right for it in a Forge World video.
Bridge Map
A bit like a cross between those bridges in the Halo: CE Campaign and Narrows or Longest. Just a vague idea in my head at the moment.
I fully expect there to be DLC maps which are as big as Forge World but have Covenant and Earth themed building materials, instead of Forerunner. Maybe I’ll save some of the ideas that don’t suit the Forerunner theme until then.
LOL GOT YOU!
I’ve not read anything for months, mainly because we’ve not bought any new books. Instead, I’ve been playing videogames. I’ll be honest – I’m struggling a bit with Pokémon Emerald. It’s not the difficulty, it’s just the slog. The areas seem a lot farther apart in this game and I’ve not found Fly yet, and as such, biking between areas and going back and forth from a new area I’m trying to get through to the Pokémon Centre after four of my trainee Pokémon have fainted is wearing thin.
I bought Afterburner Climax the other day, and while it is quite a decent game, it’s quite short. It’s also baffling why they allowed you to turn the EX options (such as a larger targeting reticule and automatic missile launching) on and still get Achievements. It was so easy, I even logged in to Jane’s account and got the 200 G’s for her, too. I’m proud that I got some of the harder Achievements (like getting the best ending) on her game on my first go with none of the EX options turned on. I also got her some G’s in other Xbox Live Arcade games: Geometry Wars 2, Virtual On: Oratorio Tangram, New Rally X, Gunstar Heroes and Qix++. It was quite fun going back and getting some Achievements all over again – Wax On and Wax Off on Geometry Wars 2 were still pretty tricky and took more than one attempt, but the New Rally X ones were as easy as the first time.
It’s a shame Virtual On: Oratorio Tangram is such an awful game nowadays, I used to love it on the Saturn. With the advent of proper dual-stick controls, the novel method they adopted several years ago for the arcade version has become horribly out-dated. Along with the whole boosting mechanic, and having to press both triggers at once to fire your third weapon, it’s just a bit fiddly. Give me standard first-person controls any day. Gunstar Heroes on the other hand, has aged very well. The visuals still stand up as they are vibrant, stylised and full of character, the tunes are still memorable and distinct, and the gameplay is still rock-solid. It’s a shame it’s such a slight experience by today’s standards.
I absolutely adore Qix++. They’ve changed the aim of the game from the original version in that it’s no longer just about claiming area and avoiding the enemies – to score big you have to hem the Qix into a small space with precision cuts, then take 90%+ of the arena at once. For example, instead of cutting right up the middle and claiming half the screen, cut up then back down again (this may need to be done in three or four seperate moves, just to be safe!), reducing the available space for the Qix to move around in. The less space they have to move around in, the smaller they get, making it easier to further reduce their territory. They do tend to get enraged quicker when they are smaller though, boosting their speed and overall danger. I’m chuffed that on Jane’s game I completed Section 1, cleared all 8 stages with 95% or more, scored over 3,000,000 points and fully upgraded the marker on my first go.
Keep your ammo cool - And your bacon hot
I’ve also been playing quite a lot of Monday Night Combat – I had my first “proper” go with the RF crew last night, and it made the experience so much better than teaming up with random people. Crossfire is, at it’s heart, an objective-based game – those who forget that will lose. At times we faced opposition who treated the game more like a straight up Deathmatch, it reminded me of the golden days of Halo. They’d just be going around in a gang killing our team, while we formulated a strategy and fulfilled the objective to win. No matter how many kills you get, if it shows you a “You Lose” screen at the end of the game, you’re gonna feel like a loser.
I also hit my 75% completion target on True Achievements, so it’s all good. Not sure where to go from there though, 80% would take a serious amount of new games, as I got up to the 75% by mostly going back to old games I hadn’t quite got the most out of, achievement-wise.
